Planking - Get over yourselves media, you did not discover this. [Video]

So apparently a kid in Australia died while doing a "planking" photo... And now "planking" is being touted as some new fangled under ground thing. Here are some pro tips internet. "Planking" used to be called the "Laying Down Game" this was started in Europe by a couple of guys. The LDG was a spin off of a Korean MEME where you pretend to be dead. The main difference between the Euro and JP MEME is the Euro version you would lay out stiff like a plank of wood, hence the name. While the Korean version you would lay so it appeared you were dead, basically limply.

Now, I AM very saddened to hear someone died while taking a picture for this MEME (Even if he WAS drunk and doing it on a 7th story balcony). However, the media response to this is horrible... You did not "find" planking, you did not coin it.

Gawker has a good article up at the moment covering the time line for the "planking" (I am sorry to me it will always be the Laying Down Game) although they do leave out the original Korean MEME roots.

If you want to know even more about the Planking and Laying Down game Know Your Meme has a great video up on Youtube about the entire history, watch it here;

Be sure to check out Know Your Meme's other videos as well, they cover most of the big MEME's for the last few years.
